Using online video as a bread crumb trail….

I ended a call with a client who asked, next time, to be enlightened as to the ways of Technorati.

Technorati is a social networking tool that acts in a manner similar to Google, except they track blogs. They track what bloggers are blogging about and they track links between blogs.

Right now, I’d like to illustrate how I found another blog…. and how featuring a you tube video pulled me in.

So, I click on the WTF, of which I have none. So I click on the link to see other members’ WTFs .

I get a result of “My whole Family thinks I’m gay.” I’m amused by the title and I click.
I am NOT taken to YouTube, but rather the “Sanity Not Included” blog where I am greeted with a You Tube video.

In fishing terms, the worm was writhing on the hook and I just bit. I look to the previous posts and see one called “Freaky Friday”. Well, it’s Friday and Fridays are always “freaky” for me, so I click upon that link next.

Now I’m at the Freaky Friday post, which is a list of obscure “Internet Laws” the blog’s author assembled from Wikipedia.

Notice ALL of this began with a compelling headline…. and continued because of other compelling headlines. (Remember, 80% read the headline… only 20%% go on to read more.)

However, it’s also important to note that a video, found on You Tube was the catalyst for the post and the way she drew me to her blog. What I’m saying is, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE YOUR VIDEO THAT YOU USE AS BAIT!

Leigh Turland isn’t selling her services and doesn’t have a product to sell from her site… however, she has earned a link from me. It isn’t much now from this blog… it’s new… but someday it will be, hopefully on BOTH fronts!

This is the magic of blogging COMBINED with the magic of video. But there isn’t any magic… just a skillful combination of two powerful marketing tools, which Leigh can put to work at ANY TIME from her blogger account blog.

NOTE: Leigh’s blog is hosted with Google’s Blogger, which is a free service. If Leigh were to want to launch a business blog, I’d recommend a blog on her own hosting account with her own domain name. She could then use her “free” blog too drive traffic to her “new” business blog while she waiting for the new blog to gain traction and over take her “free” blog account in traffic and readers.
