Blocking You Tube

In case you haven’t heard, Brazil is ordering their ISPs to block YouTube after court decision on sex video.

Daniella CicarelliThe story is, a Brazilan model was videotaped having sex on the beach. The video was uploaded to You Tube and the model successfully petitioned the court to have the video removed. Well, the nature of the internet is that once this video was posted to You Tube, removing the user’s account did NOT end the uploads. Since You Tube can’t “unring” the bell, the court has ordered Brazilian ISPs to block the site.

This story has gone from the internet to leading story on the cable news television stations in less than two weeks. The fact that the video that accompanies the story is footage of a beautiful Brazilian model strutting her stuff on the run way, with her ample “tracks of land” (Monty Python reference) barely covered plays a significant part of the popularity of the story.

To no one’s surprise, the ensuing publicity is being reported as “have definitely not hurt the model’s career.”

As a matter of fact, at Boing Boing, (they’ve obviously seen the video, I haven’t) they say the version of the video that is currently circulating actually contains cheesy production music! Hardly an impromptu video capture of a romantic and unstaged moment on the beach if you ask me.

The story has all the trappings of a successful publicity stunt by the model Daniela Cicarelli’s handlers. After all, this story has not only a beautiful young woman engages in a public sex act, it also features You Tube’s parent company, internet giant Google paying obscene sums of money (over $100,000 per day) for each day the video remains up.

It’s an old formula: Sex + Lawsuit + Big Money = incredible hype. However, if nothing else, the internet has cut the time it takes such stories to make it to the lead item on the evening news.

Our ability to capture spontaneous video has increased exponetially over the past decade. Many, many people carry phones which can capture video. Remember that the next time you’re tempted to recreate the sex scene on the beach from the movie Here to Eternity . If you do, hopefully the ensuing maelstrom will help, not hurt your career.
